Looking For Car Insurance Help? Get That Help Here!

Believe it or not, the amount you drive can affect your insurance premium. If you can prove to your insurance company that you drive fewer miles, they are likely to lower your premium.

Try and avoid getting points on your license. When accidents and tickets are on your driving record, your insurance costs can go through the roof. If you do have citations or accident reports on your record, you may be able to get them removed by attending driving school, which will lower your rates.

Attorneys and lawsuits are generally not worth the expense and hassle unless a claim is over $25,000. The better option is to cooperate with your adjuster in order to reach a deal. Often, the cost of an attorney excedes what he or she might save you in court.

Some coverage items are not worth the extra cash though. If you have a car that is not of high monetary value, you may just want to cover your car with liability insurance. You may find that you save a significant amount of money by eliminating unnecessary coverage. You should also think about dropping your comprehensive and liability coverage.

When you are figuring out what you need in the way of coverage, think about what car you have. Old vehicles that aren’t worth much require less coverage, than more expensive models. Always take into account how desirable your car is to thieves. Even some older cars get stolen often, you should think about getting some comprehensive coverage.

Get a high deductible if you want to save money on your bill. Even though in an incident where you have minimum damage from an accident, you will be responsible for the higher out of pocket expenses. In cases of total loss of the value of your vehicle or liability, you’ll still have the necessary protection. If your car is not worth very much, a high deductible can be a good choice.

Practically every driver is paying a different auto insurance premium. There are more factors than circumstances and vehicle types. Some people can get superior coverage for less. You can be someone like that, if you research the tips of auto insurance further.

Do I have to give up my driving licence?

There are many different reasons which lead people to ask the question “Do I have to give up my driving licence?”. The following will concentrate on the three main reasons why people seek to know the answer to ‘Do I have to give up my driving licence?”.

I have committed a number of driving offences, do I have to give up my driving licence?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors: the seriousness of the offences, the number of offences, the number of points you’re allowed to have on your licence. In the U.K., a newly qualified driving is only allowed to amass 6 points on their driving licence within the two year probationary period that is placed upon all new drivers. A fully qualified driver with more experience can have up to 12 points on their licence before revocation of the licence occurs.

TIP! In order to avoid feeling stressed out constantly you should do regular exercise. Exercising regularly plays an important role in minimizing and preventing the negative effects of stress.

Do I have to give up my driving licence if I commit a serious offence?

If you have committed one or more serious offences, the likelihood of your licence being revoked is increased. In the U.K., for example, if you get several speeding tickets (at 3 points a time), you will be asked to choose between accepting the points and getting your licence revoked or paying to take something called a Speed Awareness course which aims to reduce the likelihood of your speeding. If you are involved in a serious accident and you are found to be at fault, immediate revocation is a possibility.

TIP! Exercise is a highly effective way to manage stress. When you exercise, your body releases feel-good chemicals known as endorphins.

Do I have to give up driving licence when I emmigrate?

Another common question is whether drivers have to give up their U.K. driving licence when they emmigrate. The short answer is yes, you will in one way or another be forced to give up your U.K. driving licence in favour of one from the country you are emmigrating to. Once you move out of the U.K. your driving licence will no longer be considered valid within the U.K.

TIP! If the source of your stress is something that you have to face every single day such as a job or a bad commute, consider making a change. Big changes like finding a new job or moving to a new location can be stressful in and of themselves, but in many cases it is worth it to eliminate the original ongoing source of stress once and for all.

In some countries e.g. Australia, you’re allowed to use your U.K. licence in their country for the first three months of residence. If you want to keep driving, you will then have to change it to an Australian driving licence. If you’ve been driving for 2 years or more, this process is fairly straightforward as you don’t have to retake any practical tests.

There is also good news if you’re planning to emmigrate to Canada from the U.K., as you will be able to exchange your U.K. licence to a Class 5 Alberta licence without too much hassle.

TIP! To help you with managing stress you should reduce or avoid caffeine and sugar. Caffeine and sugar can give you a temporary high but often end in a mood and energy crash.

Do I have to give up my driving licence now I have been diagnosed with epilepsy?

In the U.K., there are strict regulations concerning epilepsy/seizures and driving. The DVLA states that if you have experienced any type of seizure, then you must stop driving. With seizures, it is very hard to determine whether you lost consciousness even if it was just a small seizure. It is therefore considered safer to ban all drivers that have experienced seizures, at least until they have been seizure free for a year or more. This is intended to reduce the dangers of having a seizure while at the wheel of a car. The safest course of action for drivers who have experienced seizures is to give up their driver’s licence if more than one seizure incident has occurred. While this is true, it is not necessarily required of you to give up your licence, merely to stop driving for a while.

TIP! Try keeping a journal to help you cope with stress. Getting your feelings down on paper can often help you find solutions to problems or see things from a different angle.

From reading the above article, you can see that the reasons for asking “Do I have to give up my driving licence?” are many and varied. These are just the most commonly sought answers to the most commonly asked questions relating to giving up a driving licence.

Show Me Tell Me

TIP!

The DSA test your knowledge on basic car maintenance and safety by requiring that you answer two questions from the Show me, Tell Me questions test. At the start of the practical driving test the Show Me, Tell Me questions will begin. The examiner that accompanies you on your driving test will ask you two questions, one Show Me and one Tell Me. Answer either or both of these two questions incorrectly and you will gain one driving test fault. There are a number of different questions which can be asked in different combinations. Below are many of the Show Me, Tell Me questions and answers.

Q1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level.

TIP!

A. Identify the coolant tank and check the min/max markings. If the coolant is below the min mark then more coolant will need to be added. To do this, unscrew the cap and pour in coolant until the max mark is reached.

Q2. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

TIP!

A. Identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid level against the min/max levels.

Q3. Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

TIP! Part of the cost of your auto insurance is based on where you live. In particular, people who live in urban areas, generally pay a significant amount more for their auto insurance than people who live in rural areas.

A. If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be faulty. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. 1) Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. 2) Turning the steering wheel after just moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assisted steering is functioning correctly.

Q4. Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working.

TIP!

A. Activate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in garage doors etc to see if the brake lights come on or ask someone to help.

Q5. Open the bonnet identify, where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has enough oil.

TIP!

A. Identify the dipstick, pull it out and check the oil level against the min/max markings.

Q6. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

TIP!

A. Press the horn and listen (turn on ignition if necessary).

Q7. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

TIP! Before purchasing a car, check the insurance rates that come with it. The premium amount varies between different vehicles.

A. Identify the windscreen washer level reservoir and explain how to check the level. Your car manual will give you further details.

Q8. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

TIP! Remember to cancel your old insurance policy and any direct debit that you may have set up when you purchase a new policy. Some companies take care of this for you, but it is always good to follow up and make sure your old policy is canceled.

A. As you move off check the brakes. They should not feel spongy and the car should not pull to one side.

Q9. Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

TIP! In the USA – Don’t buy a minimum-liability policy unless it is your only option. Minimum coverage limits mandated by state insurance boards are usually too low to protect your assets if you are found to be responsible for an automobile accident.

A. Turn on lights (turn ignition if necessary), walk around car and check that the lights are on.

Q10. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.

TIP! Get knowledgeable about the coverage you have on your vehicle, versus the coverage you have available to you. You may find that you could have a significantly higher coverage available to you than you are taking advantage of.

A. Activate the indicators or hazard warning lights and walk around the car to see if all the indicators are working correctly.

Q11. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

TIP! Carry comprehensive and collision coverage if you have a newer vehicle or one worth a great deal. If you do not have a lien, you are not required to carry these coverages, but they provide protection for specific types of claims which can be crucial for expensive or newer vehicles.

A. Information will be found using the car manufacturers manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Do not forget the spare and remember to refit the valve caps.

Q12. Tell me how you would check the tyres to show that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

TIP!

A. A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central 3/4s of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Q13. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

TIP! In the USA, top tier status refers to the percentage of customers from a insurance company that have filed the fewest claims and have the best driving record. Perhaps you qualify as a top tier customer, or your status will improve over the years.

A. Apply the parking brake. When it is fully applied it should secure itself.

Q14. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

TIP! In the USA – People looking to save money on auto insurance should remember that the fewer miles they drive, the more insurance agents like it, because your risk goes down. So if you work from home, make sure to let your agent know.

A. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraints are not adjustable.

Q15. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

TIP! Make sure you shop around before buying your insurance. Each company uses a different formula based on your previous driving records on the questions you answer to figure out what your insurance premium is.

A. Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear windscreens and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.

TIP! In the USA – If you are not purchasing auto insurance from a well known company that you trust, verify that the company you are dealing with is licensed in your state. You can verify it through your state insurance department.

Q16. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them. No need to exit vehicle.

A. Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

TIP! You should review your auto insurance policy regularly to make sure it accurately reflects your situation and your vehicle. Doing this shortly before your policy is set to renew is a good idea.

Q17. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.

A. Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.

TIP! If you really want to get the best deal in auto insurance, take good care of your car and keep it for a very long time! A well-cared for older car will serve you well, and your insurance rates will just keep going down. The more often you change cars, the more expense you can expect in everything from insurance, to payments and taxes.

Q18. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

A. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

TIP! To help save money on car insurance, start with a car that is cheaper to insure. Buying a sporty car with a large V-8 engine can push your annual insurance premium to double what it would be for a smaller, less flashy car with a 4 cylinder engine that saves gas at the same time.

As previously stated, if you get either or both of the questions wrong you will get one minor fault.

TIP! A great tip for affordable motor insurance is to consider the possibility of increasing your deductible. If you have a higher deductible, you will not have to pay as much interest.

The show me tell me questions are designed to ensure that test applicants have a basic understanding of the vehicle that they are responsible for. It is advisable to become familiar with all of the controls and instruments of your vehicle. In the event of a sudden downpour for example, it is really important to know how to operate the wiper control.

At night, when lighting conditions are such that visibility is severely restricted, you really need to know how to operate both sidelights and headlights. As regards headlights you should also know how to use the main beam feature.

TIP! When you have a claim against your insurance, you need to provide facts. Make sure you have all the relevant information for anybody who was involved in the accident.

When driving in foggy conditions, in order to enable other road users to be aware of your presence you need to know the location of your fog lamp.

All of the above make sense so familiarise yourself with your controls and instruments.

Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving?

The question “Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving?” is an interesting one, because there are a lot of ambiguous laws around the world relating to this question. For example, in Northern Ireland, as long as the phone is operated without holding the device in your hand i.e. using hands-free, using a mobile phone while driving isn’t actually prohibited by recent laws.

Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving in the U.K?

TIP! One way to keep your car insurance costs low is by not buying a sports car. Insurance companies charge higher rates for sporty vehicles since they have higher horsepower, tend to be driven by younger, riskier drivers and are notorious for moving at high speeds.

A number of driving related organisations e.g. DSA, DVLA have stated that it’s illegal to operate a hand-held mobile phone and it has been since the year 2003. Being found using a mobile phone whilst driving in the U.K. can result in fines and a number of penalty points (3) being added to your driving licence.

Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving in the U.K in conjunction with a hands-free device?

TIP! In the USA – One thing that you can do in order to get low auto insurance rates is to take an advanced driving test. These driving tests show insurance companies that you have taken an extra step in safe driving and that you are less likely to get involved in an accident.

Whilst using a mobile phone with a hands-free device while driving isn’t strictly illegal in the U.K., if you happen to be in an accident, using a mobile phone with hands-free will have a bearing on your case in court. The prosecutor will be able to argue the point that you were being a careless/distracted driver and if you are thought to have not been in total control of the car when using hands-free features, you’ll be prosecuted and recieve the same punishments as if you were actually holding the device.

Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving in an emergency situation?

TIP! If you need to get work done on your car after an accident, make sure that you get multiple quotes from body shops. The insurance adjuster will have their own estimate, and you need to make sure that their estimate is comparable to the cost of actually getting the work that is needed done.

Yes, you are legally allowed to make calls to 999 to get in contact with emergency services if there’s a genuine emergency. If it is impractical or unsafe to stop, the use mobile phones whilst driving is allowed and you are exempt from the law against operating a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving.

Can I use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving if I am stuck in traffic or have pulled over to the side of the road?

TIP! Shop for auto insurance yearly. Even if you have no intention of changing policies, or providers, take the time to compare your rate.

In the U.K. it is illegal to operate a hand-held mobile while you’re in the driver’s seat and the engine is running. Therefore, using a mobile while stopped at traffic lights, or even when pulled over isn’t legal. If you really need to have a conversation with someone, you should keep the conversation as brief as possible to make the phone call as safe as you can.

Can I use a hand-held mobile device whilst driving in other countries?

TIP! In the USA – Do you know what it means when your auto insurance policy contains full coverage? Full coverage auto insurance generally refers to having both comprehensive and collision coverage. An insurer rarely uses the term full coverage because it implies a higher insurance standard than what both comprehensive and collision usually cover.

In the U.S., no ban is currently in place for adults driving vehicles (as long as they’re non-commercial). Approximately 30 of the U.S. states have a ban in place to regulate the use of phones by young people whilst they’re driving though e.g. Indiana and Kentucky both don’t allow those under 18 to operate a mobile whilst driving. In New Jersey, the law applies to young drivers below 21.

There are several countries where only the use of hand-held phone is illegal (e.g. can still use hands-free) and some of these are: Australia, Portugal, Russia, Republic of China, and Italy.

TIP! In the USA – Contact your human resources department or your insurance agent to inquire as to whether or not your employer is considered “preferred” for special discounts or allowances. Many auto insurance companies partner with major local employers and work unions, to offer significantly reduced rates in the form of smaller monthly premiums or add-on services.

In some countries, the use of phones while driving is legal for all drivers e.g. in all Canadian provinces except Alberta, New Brunswick and Quebec, the act of using a mobile phone whilst driving is completely legal.

Learning To Drive Syllabus

If you are considering learning to drive or still quite new to it, the following may be of interest to you.

All qualified driving instructors are trained with a view to being able to pass on their skills to their pupils and as with most things, there is a fairly standard procedure to enable this. It is called the Driving Syllabus.

The Driving Syllabus is a collection, a bit like an itinerary, of the processes you are required to master in order to make the transition from being a learner driver to that of a competent, fully qualified one.

A fairly typical Driving Syllabus is a follows:-

  • Cockpit Checks
  • Controls & Instruments
  • Moving Off
  • Moving Off On A Hill
  • Stopping
  • Safe Positioning
  • Mirrors – Vision & Use
  • Signals – Use Of
  • Anticipation & Planning
  • Use Of Speed
  • Meeting Other Traffic
  • Junctions
  • Roundabouts
  • Pedestrian Crossings
  • Dual Carriageways
  • Turn In The Road
  • Reversing To The Left
  • Bay Parking
  • Parallel Parking
  • Emergency Stops

Elsewhere on this site I will provide an explanation for each part of the driving syllabus.

It is important to realise that you need to master all of the Driving Syllabus components.

Am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?

There are a lot of learner drivers out there, who sometimes act without thinking about how it affects their driving instructors. Stopping to think once in a while to consider the question “Am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?” would, perhaps, lead more people to act appropriately towards driving instructors.

Of course, there are good and bad driving instructors just like there are good and bad pupils. The instructor may deserve to be treated unfairly- but that doesn’t really justify doing so effectively.

The question”Am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?” could be moot, but it is nevertheless interesting to note some of the activities that pupils do and how they affect the instructor. Knowing the possible things that could make you appear selfish or act unfairly could help you to refrain from doing so. It would make your learner driving experience a whole lot more enjoyable if both pupil and instructor treat each other with respect and act appropriately towards each other.

TIP! When you are shopping around for motor insurance policies, watch the amount, take note of any quotes. The competition between companies is fierce, so you need to find and compare different quotes from many insurers.

When and how am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?

An example of acting unfairly, or selfishly towards your driving instructor is cancelling a lesson on extremely short notice because of such reasons as: your friends have come up with a better way to spend your afternoon, or you drank way too much the night before. Driving is an important skill, and instructors make their living from teaching other people to drive. Cancelling a lesson without giving them enough time to book someone else in can affect their income and waste their time.

TIP!

If cancelling a lesson at short notice and then expecting them to jump through hoops to fit you back into their schedule at a convenient time for you is a regular occurance, you’re acting selfishly. Driving instructors normally have more than one pupil to teach, and messing with their schedule for no valid reason is selfish and unfair.

Another scenario which has led people to question “Am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?” is relevant to those who have just failed their test and require a resit.

TIP!

Some pupils become aggravated if they fail and are forced to wait several months in order to have another go at their test. It’s considered unreasonable for you to try and push the driving instructor into booking you for another test as soon as possible. The fact that you failed indicates that you have something that you need time to work on and the driving instructor will normally try their best to accomodate your needs. There are other pupils who have to take their test as well, it’s unfair to make the instructor try to fit everything around just you.

Blaming the instructor for your fail is also considered unfair as it is not always their fault. Although it is the driving instructor’s responsibility to prepare you for the test, it is your responsibility too. It is unfair to pin all of the blame on the instructor.

TIP! Look for new automobile insurance at least twice each year. Your driving situation is constantly changing and insurance companies will look at you differently as a result.

There are many other scenarios that cause people to question whether they are being selfish or unfair. The good news is, even if you have done one of the above things to your driving instructor, the fact that you’re researching the answer to the question “Am I being selfish and unfair on my driving instructor?” suggests that you are capable of seeing that you may have acted wrongly and can improve how you treat your instructor.

All You Need To Know About Advanced Driving

In the U.K., advanced driving is defined as the ability to effectively control speed and position of a vehicle safely in any number of traffic and road conditions. Advanced driving courses can be taken to ensure that a driver can smoothly operate a vehicle in a number of scenarios e.g. busy traffic conditions, driving past a school just after 3.30pm when lots of people will be around.

If you qualify as an advanced driver, this proves to others that you can effectively observe your surroundings and act in such a way that is courteous to other drivers and well co-ordinated. A high level of concentration while driving should be displayed. People with advanced driving skills should be able to anticipate, plan and execute of a variety of manouvres in a safe manner while on the road.

What can be defined as advanced driving?

TIP! If you become seriously injured in an auto accident, consider hiring a lawyer to deal with the other party’s insurance company. Many parts of the process, such as determining the facts of the accident and liability, are more easily completed with the help of a law firm.

The DSA in the UK (in collaboration with IAM, DAM and RoSPA) agreed on the following definitions:

- Advanced drivers should be able to unobtrusively make progress while on the road.

- Positive and courteous attitude towards other vehicles on the road.

TIP! In the USA – Consider switching your current insurance to a lower coverage policy to save a few more dollars. Depending on your state’s insurance requirements and if you are leasing or renting to own a vehicle, you may be able to lower your insurance coverage to save a little extra money each month.

- Smooth vehicle handling skills

- Advanced drivers should always be found in the correct place, at the correct time while on the road.

- They should always be travelling at the correct speed for the area, in the correct gear.

TIP! Drive safely and observe the rules of the road to lower your car insurance rates. If you avoid accidents and tickets, you may qualify for a discount as a safe driver.

- People using advanced driving skills should be able to always stop at a safe distance from other cars and exhibit clear signs of stopping before doing so e.g. slowing down at the correct time.

There are several institutions that conduct advanced driving tests e.g. RoADA, RoSPA, the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Through the use of an advanced driving test, organisations aim to increase the skill level of drivers to make them more competent road users.

What are the benefits of becoming an advanced driver?

Question! Do you concentrate properly and avoid distractions? Can you read the road and anticipate potential hazards in good time?

There are many benefits that can be gained from passing an advanced driving test. Published Road Safety reports have noted that people considered to be advanced drivers have between 50-70% less accidents than other vehicle users. While this is a benefit of great significance, there are also many other great reasons for training to become an advanced driver.

The cost of keeping a vehicle is a primary concern for a lot of people. If you pass an advanced driving test, your motoring costs will usually be cheaper as people with knowledge of advanced driving tend to be more economical drivers. This means your engine will experience less wear and is therefore less likely to develop problems. Your fuel costs will also be lower as you will learn how to avoid putting stress your car unnecessarily and using up fuel needlessly. Plus, passing an advanced driving test allows you to keep a no claims bonus or discount for longer than you would otherwise.

For others, the cheaper costs is secondary to the fact that it will make you a much safer driver. You’ll be taught how to assess risks better and act appropriately in any situation. It will give you a lot more confidence if you have not been driving for long or have not been driving for a while. Knowing how to react in situations will help you to enjoy driving more, as you will be worrying less about what is going on around you.
